History of Jaguar
When it was first established in 1922, Jaguar produced sidecar carts and went by the name The Swallow Sidecar Company. With William Lyons and William Walmsley leading the company, their focus shifted to cars a few years later and their name changed to SS Cars Ltd to reflect this.
Together, under SS Cars Ltd, Walmsley and Lyons designed and produced car parts for other manufacturers like Fiat and the Standard Motor Company before the Second World War took hold.
The company contributed to war efforts and it was during WW2 that the name Jaguar first surfaced. The rebrand was an attempt to distance the manufacturer from the Nazi SS.
In the decades following the war, Jaguar achieved multiple victories at the Le Man 24 Hours Race with the C-type, D-type and E-type proving their success.
Half a century since founding the company in 1922 William Lyons retired and Jaguar began to struggle financially.
In an attempt to salvage the brand, Jaguar has changed hands several times over the years, but it was in 1989 when they were bought out by Ford that Jaguar´s future finally looked brighter.
After 30 years under the Ford umbrella and several successes together, Jaguar was sold to Tata Motors. The Indian company then chose to combine Jaguar and Land Rover in 2013 to form Jaguar Land Rover that we know today.
