History of Jaguar
First established in 1922, Jaguar originally went by the name The Swallow Sidecar Company. Its founders William Lyons and William Walmsley manufactured motorcycle sidecars and car bodies at the time but, after a few years, they changed their name to SS Cars Ltd, and shifted their focus solely towards cars.
After forming SS Cars Ltd, Walmsley and Lyons collaborated with other car manufacturers like Fiat and Standard Motor Company to design and produce cars.
It was during the Second World War that the name Jaguar was adopted, in an attempt to distance the manufacturer from the Nazi SS.
In the decades following the war, Jaguar achieved multiple victories at the Le Man 24 Hours Race with the C-type, D-type and E-type proving their success.
William Lyons retired in 1972 after having led the company for half a century and it was around the same time that Jaguar began to struggle financially.
The car manufacturer was passed from new owner to new owner several times in an effort to salvage it but it was in 1989 when it was bought by Ford that Jaguar´s future was finally secure.
After 30 years under the Ford umbrella, Jaguar was sold to Tata Motors along with another Ford acquisition, Land Rover. The Indian company later combined the two in 2013 to form Jaguar Land Rover as we know it today.
